One other thing I forgot to mention – the part that totally blew my mind was alphabetizing those special
letters after Z. To US eyes, seeing letters that look like A and O at the end of the alphabetical order was difficult to accept, even though the native speakers were telling me it was correct,
and I was able to verify for myself online; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_alphabet
I have no clue whether the 3 additional letters in Swedish would be alphabetized correctly in a US library’s OPAC or discovery layer.
Thanks,
A-M

Not part of UM SIG, but just chiming in based on conversations with Chalmers – there are similar issues with letters with diacritics or 2 letters that appear to be smushed together
(to US eyes) actually being considered different letters from the letter without diacritics, leading to the Muller expectations disconnect for US/German or US/Swedish users.
I almost wonder if some of the searching and alphabetizing may end up needing to be tied to the localization setting.
Thanks,

Right – and in the US, where staff don’t usually have familiarity with searching with diacritics, I would expect that “muller” would find “müller”.
So next week might be a good idea for this topic.

Hi all,
I’m not going to attend today, but if you get to the diacritics/umlaute today, it would be good to discuss what would be expected here:
In the concrete case "Müller" a search with the paraphrase "Mueller" does not lead to success.
Your assumption would be that a search for:
- mueller finds "mueller" and "müller".
- müller finds "müller" and "mueller"
- muller does not find "müller"
I’d also be happy to talk about it next week.
Thanks & have a good meeting.

Hello, all.
Sorry for the late notice. The agenda for tomorrow will be:
1.
Active/inactive users. Erin got feedback from the RA SIG, and we should hear about it.
2.
What is the canonical loader (or loading process) for the bulk import of users? It was discussed a bit on Slack, but we should bring everyone up to speed here.
3.
What can we expect when searching Users, especially when a name has a diacritic in it?
Hope to see everyone there.
