Hi RM SIG folks,

We’re finalizing the FOLIO MARC Batch Loader subgroup this week and plan to begin meeting in the next week or two. It’s a crucial app for Cataloging, but also plays a large role in many Acquisitions workflows. There’s already been a lot of talk about it in the MM and RM SIGs, at the Madrid developer meeting, and various other meetings. Now we need to pull it all together, organize and finalize it, and get it ready for development.

Some MARC loading already exists for FOLIO, but none that parses a MARC record into pieces that interact with various FOLIO apps. WeCat (MARCcat) has a batch loader that may be relevant to the MARC cataloging app. But we haven’t done anything yet to deal with all the bibliographic, holdings, item, and order data that can come from external sources, and making sure that it interacts properly with all the various FOLIO apps that it can touch: Inventory, MARCcat, the various acquisitions apps.

The MARC Batch Loader subgroup will live under the auspices of the MM SIG. You’ll see it in the list on the left side of the main MM SIG wiki page. It’s really basic right now, but will grow to have links to meeting notes, wireframes, and other relevant documents as we get underway. We’re aiming for 6-8 subgroup members, from MM SIG and RM SIG, or possibly others who would be good for the group.

We’ll probably meet a couple times per week. I’m not sure of the meeting times yet – that will depend on the time zones of the members. First steps will be to make sure we’re clear on the scope of the app (MARC records only, API?, EDI, loading only vs exporting?), review all the work done so far, talk about how we handle loads in our current systems, and how we would like to handle them in FOLIO.

I’ve received several inquiries from MM SIG, but none yet from RM SIG. If you’re interested in being part of this subgroup, please e-mail Kristin Martin and me ASAP. If you don’t want to be on the subgroup, but want to make sure we talk about particular topics or questions, please send those to Kristin and me too.

Thank you!
