Okay – I’m sorry to drop this on all of you, but as you can see from the exchange below we’re looking for a couple of representatives from the RA SIG who are willing to step up and represent us to the Codex group.

 

It is vital that we be represented here.  Our participants will not only bring RA needs to the Codex, but will also be able to help us ensure that we are meeting the needs of the larger FOLIO community while we develop circulation/access functionality.

Hi Andrea,

 

The FOLIO data model and the Codex should form the underpinnings of how FOLIO communicates information across the different apps. The Codex will need to contain the information about individual resources being managed through FOLIO to allow FOLIO apps to take actions on those resources. E.g., if a book needs to be checked out to a patron, what data is needed by FOLIO to complete this transaction? The Codex is designed to be format-agnostic, so if metadata is coming into FOLIO from a variety of sources, key data can be mapped to the Codex regardless of the source record.

 

The Codex is a work in progress, but I think the best way for someone unfamiliar with the Codex would be to review the meeting Resource Management/Metadata Management held on May 26 (https://wiki.folio.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1413620) and June 2 (https://wiki.folio.org/display/RM/2017-06-02+Meeting+notes)

Hi Kristin,

   This is a bit awkward, barring an email I got from Sharon earlier today, this is the first that I’ve heard of the FOLIO Codex.    I’m happy to put out a call for volunteers but the RA SIG is likely to need more info about the structure as it currently exists in order to be useful.

 

I’ll be away all of next week so I’ll need to get this request out to SIG participants ASAP.  Anything  you can provide to help me educate the team and help them decide whether or not to take part would be appreciated.

Hi Andrea,

 

I am trying to organize a group of experts to work on the FOLIO Data Model/Codex. As you probably know, Cate Boerema at EBSCO is the Product Owner for this work, which has undergone several different iterations. The Resource Management and Metadata Management teams have been jointly working on Codex develop during regular SIG meetings, but progress has been slow, and members have had a hard time figure out how to best contribute to the effort. The group is large and members who have been attending has varied meeting to meeting. Additionally, we haven’t had anyone with Resource Access Expertise, which seems important since the Codex should be designed to work across all key functionality. I recommended creating a separate, dedicated group to working on the Codex, which will hopefully be able to dive more deeply into considerations and provide a concentrated effort on the development, as this is foundational work for the FOLIO software as a whole. I am hoping for 2 members from each SIG, am right now am looking for 3-4 names of potential individuals. One of the criteria for selecting members, in addition to their expertise, is their ability to commit to a quick timeline. Members of the group should expect to bring examples of workflows in their areas that will need to use the Codex to help with the modeling. The work is expected to commence quickly, with even the possibility of a meeting at ALA. Other initial work will likely be a half-day workshop online, but if group determines a F2F meeting is needed, then that will need to be scheduled immediately. If there are members of the Resource Access SIG, including yourself, who you think would be a good fit, would you be able to reach out to them to see if they would be interested? We would like to have a list of potential members by mid-next week, and then will have a doodle poll for availability.
