Based on the parameters that are currently showing in the policy document, we would have around 200 loan policies. That is a very rough estimate. In our current Voyager system, we have 22 “circ policy groups.” But the variables that go into these circ policy groups are different than those showing in the document.

The different combinations of library-item type-patron group and variations are called “loan rules” in FOLIO.  The creation of loan rules is what you have been working on with Filip.  Loan policies, on the other hand, are the set of data we have been fleshing out in this document.  Each loan policy can be associated with 0 to many loan rules.

 

We aren’t finished defining the data to be collected in loan policies, but below is a wireframe of what the form looks like so far.  Let me know if that doesn’t make sense.

What counts as a loan policy? Here at Cornell, we have separate rules for every combination of library – item type – patron group, and variations within those combos that pertain to renewals, fines, grace periods, and many other parameters. There are currently 6,194 circulation rules in our matrix, but if you strip out the finely detailed settings that would make a fully-configured rule, we have 29 distinct loan period/loan interval combinations.
